Which distro / version is on the disk?
In Ubuntu, you can mount drives easily by right-clicking on the one of the system bars, clicking "Add to Panel", and choosing the "Disk Mounter" tool. Now any harddrives (including external) will appear as icons in the system bar. Clicking on them enables you to mount them, and from there you can open them in the file manager and drag / drop the files.
