Indeed...
I view jail as a way to keep those troublesome individuals away from the remaining society. It's the grown up version of "you can't behave properly - go to the corner".
This "punishment" should be interpreted as a cooling of and learning that that behavior is undesired and must be avoided... instead, prisons have people wanting to go back in... Not all, I think, but some will.... some will always be troublesome... some will never have any reason to want to belong with the rest of society.
Now, should we offer corporal punishment to any and all crimes?
Should we make people bleed when they steal something? Should the amount of blood flowing be proportional to the value of the thing stolen?
How about politicians? Should we make them bleed for the millions they take from everyone and put in the hands of a few friends (and themselves)? Is locking them up a solution? They need to be caught and tried, first... that's not happening...
Clearly, then, the system is flawed... should we make people bleed on a flawed system?
