When studying human evolution, it is typically presumed that the modern chimpanzee and the other great apes, represent more ancestral traits as to the LCA between humans and the apes alive today. But this may not be the case for all of the traits we see in each modern group, as the Miocene apes should be treated as potential candidates for analysis of the LCA as well (at least with respect to traits like the femur in the article below).
