I don't have much experience with tablets but I do have a Nook HD+. As far as pricing goes a Nook would win. I bought mine for $179 plus tax. An ipad is going to cost a heck of a lot more than that. My wife has a Google Nexus 7 and stepdaughter has a Samsung Galaxy 3.
With a Nook you won't have a camera but Barnes & Nobles has focused on making the Nook a device mainly for reading and entertainment.
A Kindle would be a good choice if you are already invested in Amazon. If you have a lot of money burning a hole in your pocket buy an ipad.
Nooks don't natively support AVI files but there's an app for that as the saying goes. I'm really enjoying mine. A good thing about the Nook and Samsung is that you can add a MicroSD card for more file storage. The Google Nexus doesn't have that option. You have to store files in the cloud if you need more space. The Samsung Galaxy my stepdaughter has, has been causing her some grief though. Locking up and sometimes refusing to turn on. We haven't experienced any of that on the nooks or nexus.
