(This is primarily about 10" tablets; the 7" tablet market is considerably different, with Ipad and Nexus being top dog in it, followed by Samsung.)
Breakdown by price:
Ipad > Nexus 10 or 7 > Asus Infinity > Asus Transformer or Acer Iconia A700 > Acer A500 / A210 > Nook / Kindle HD > older nook / kindle
Pluses and minuses:
Ipad: + = strong usability, community, good hardware, excellent screen; - = expensive, tied to Apple app store, no memory expansion slot
Nexus 10 /7: + great hardware and usability, community, better price for ipad quality, excellent screen; - = no memory expansion
Asus Infinity: Very good hardware (old and new models), excellent screen, price, memory card slot, add-on keyboard ($120); missing some of the usability and community appeal of Nexus and Ipad, not as sexy.
Asus Transformer: Similar to the Infinity, but lower resolution screen.
Acer Iconia A700, A500, A210: A700 = high res screen, others low res. Not as quick or smooth as other tablets, it's a "bargain" tablet, but Acer has made good choices in terms of compromising price versus features / performance.
Nook / Kindle HD, older models: Tied to crippled versions of Android with less flexibility and app choice as a result; great price; good hardware. Some can be 'rootkitted' to allow them to run full Android (voids warranty; see cyanogenmod for details). Kindle and Nook betray their eReader origins, but if you can fit your needs inside their limits, they're a steal at the price.
If you have specific further questions, feel free to PM me.
Depending on your price range, I'd recommend the Asus Infinity or a Nexus. The higher resolution screens do make a big difference. Walmart has a 'Yabi' which I haven't examined, but I understand it's a Kindle device, retailing slightly lower than full Kindles.
