In my opinion, it's probably his best work as far as horror fiction is concerned. He does better world building in At the Mountains of Madness, but The Colour Out of Space is one of the few H.P. Lovecraft stories I've ever read that made me feel genuinely creeped out (The Shunned House is another one). Most of his writing makes me feel like I would want to explore the places that he's describing, which probably doesn't say a lot about how well I would do at maintaining my sanity if I were a Lovecraft protagonist. I really wouldn't particularly want to go to the blasted heath, and I definitely wouldn't drink the water in Arkham.
