I had to put down one of my last dogs. He just got to old and arthritic, plus his teeth were too worn down. So I drove him to the vet, and he actually looked pretty happy because he hadn't been for a nice ride in a while. And then I left him with the lady and went home. And I'm tearing up just typing this. God damn.
I've actually heard it's best to stay with your pet when they put them down, because the pet gets scared. I wonder if I should have stayed, but I just didn't think about it. The vet lady didn't ask.
