I've actually heard it's best to stay with your pet when they put them down, because the pet gets scared. I wonder if I should have stayed, but I just didn't think about it. The vet lady didn't ask.
I experienced putting a pet down for the first time about three years ago. Before that my dad took them to the vet without the family (though we had one unexpected death that was shocking), but with Mo that wasn't really an option given that we were all home and I was the one holding him when he... well, did the thing that necessitated the decision to put him down. Let's just say it was a traumatic experience.
