LSD has the same effect.

I don't think anyone reports a mystical or religious experience from using LSD though DMT seems to do something like that. I think it may facilitate the interaction between matter and consciousness hence the experience people will get when they take larger than natural occurring amounts of it. Also large amounts of DMT are present in the brain after someone experiences a near (or temporary) death experience. There's an interesting book about it here.
