You've never walked a day in the life of a Mormon, have you? You have no idea what a person in the Westboro Baptist Church deals with on a daily basis, do you? My point is that not every Christian experience is rainbows and skittles. Try thinking like a fundamentalist for a day, and then come back and tell us just how strange the world starts to look to you.
The short version? Stop trying to invalidate his personal experience; you're doing it wrong.
