I was raised to accept that god existed; that his existence was a given and it did not need to be verified because it was true. Without that faith, I would not have been able to gain the "understanding" that would lead to "knowledge" of god. If you do it any differently, if you try to understand god and gain knowledge before you determine that he is real, then I think it really is impossible to accept. You must accept his existence on faith and only then does the rest make any sense.
As long as you don't question that foundation and try to find god, you are okay. I reject the idea that the person who does not find god is not searching in the proper way. I think that the person who does not find god is the one who actually bothered to search.
"Well, evolution is a theory. It is also a fact. And facts and theories are different things, not rungs in a hierarchy of increasing certainty. Facts are the world's data. Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts. Facts don't go away when scientists debate rival theories to explain them. Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from ape- like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin's proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be discovered."
