The person who wrote about it (who wasn't there at the time) said there were 500 witnesses, none of whom were named or wrote anything down themselves.

Does that really sound legit to you? There's a hadith that Mohammed split the moon in half with a sword and then it was joined back together again, how many witnesses would they have to say saw it for you to believe it's true?
