How are you pulling the link apart? Are you pulling the ends directly away from each other, or are you "twisting" the ends the create the gap? I do the twist method because it's easier to just twist them right back where they were. I use two pairs of needle-nosed pliers, too, because the points are small and more easy to maneuver.
