I know rote learned, simplistic commandments might be appealing to you, and so this might blow your mind, but why does it need to be one person? Why can't we accept a constantly evolving morality that grows as we learn more and share experiences together?
Quote:Seeing that MAN is infinitely flawed, what, or more precisely, "who" is king of the jungle for you? Politics? Science? The Courts? You Father in law? Old man Charles from down the street?
Would you not agree that we're living in reality together, all of us, and that there are certain sets of predictable reactions to stimuli that we generally share? Maybe it's scary to you, to think of having to consider your own morals based on observation and careful justification of the facts we're presented with and how they apply to us, but some of us are more happy to think before we act.
Quote: It would seem to me the promise of being an atheist should lead me to a conclusion that whatever is good for me, no one else matters.
It's funny, of all of us, the one who doesn't see the use of moral acts is the theist who demands that we don't. All I'm getting out of this is that you're a moral degenerate who can produce no reason to act as a moral, empathetic human being without being threatened. It really paints a poor picture of you, dude.
Other people matter because we succeed more often when we cooperate, and we're wired to be happy as social animals. Is that so hard?
Quote:I will anticipate replies of how generous and loving and charitable ya'll are. But why would you? You have no Almighty watching, so screw the next guy, and take what's yours.
Except that with my help, the next guy can be a part of a society that makes us both happy and prosperous, even if we've never met. Are you so completely intellectually stunted that you can't even look at the world we live in, and how much of our lives hang on our ability to cooperate?
And again, thank you for making the subtext that you can't figure out why anyone would act like a person without a cosmic standover man making you scared.

Quote: And hurry up because you only live here for a short time, and you don't have an eternity waiting for you, So, go get while the getting is good.
My short time here is enhanced by the people around me, my friends and family. I'm very sorry that you don't feel anything for any other human on this planet, it must be a lonely existence.
