A priori patriotism is for the weak minded. If I'm not proud of the way my country is handling its own business, I am not proud of the way we insist on handling everyone else's business, I am not proud that we currently have the most bullshit congress that ever existed, and not proud of the way we treat our own citizens, why should I be proud to be an American? I love my country, but I don't think it's honorable or even a good thing to just de facto be proud to be an American. It's even more deplorable to gloat over the fact that conservatives are more likely to say they are proud of this failing country. It is yet more detestable to say if you're not proud of the corruption and petty partisanship that seems to define this country, then GTFO.
When America starts doing things that are worthy of pride and not shooting itself in the foot on nearly every front, then I'll sing from the rooftops. We are quickly sliding towards the opposite.

"There remain four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking." ~Christopher Hitchens, god is not Great
