I actually went to the opposite extreme when I first mentioned the holiday in conversation with a Londoner, over-explaining, assuming he hadn't heard of the 4th of July before. My logic was that I'm not familiar with the national holidays of foreigners and would need a similar elaboration from them. Kind of like how Boxing Day needed to be explained to me.
