How to perpetuate a myth
#12
RE: How to perpetuate a myth
LMAO.

The christian religion was well constructed in it's first few centuries, it has withstood the passage of time, the advancement of society, and the various enlightenment periods throughout the last two years. The naivity of humanity will surprise you if you aren't expecting that. I would like to be able to say that if someone created christianity today, they would be scoffed at mercilessly and the religion would suffer a quick, hilarious death. But then again scientology still exists. The logical part of my brain says that we are smarter than this, have to be, but then the observant part of my brain says no, no we're still a bunch of fucking morons.

Mythology is perpetuated because some people frankly "need" to believe in something. Life is rough sometimes, and it helps if there is an imaginary place somewhere with dead relatives and music, free candy and folk dances for all eternity. I compare theological mythology to those dumb old wives tales like going outside without a cold causes colds, if people are told something for long enough, if it's ingrained within them at an early age, they will on some level believe it forever.
"In our youth, we lacked the maturity, the decency to create gods better than ourselves so that we might have something to aspire to. Instead we are left with a host of deities who were violent, narcissistic, vengeful bullies who reflected our own values. Our gods could have been anything we could imagine, and all we were capable of manifesting were gods who shared the worst of our natures."-Me

"Atheism leaves a man to sense, to philosophy, to natural piety, to laws, to reputation; all of which may be guides to an outward moral virtue, even if religion vanished; but religious superstition dismounts all these and erects an absolute monarchy in the minds of men." – Francis Bacon
