Why put the tree there? It's like putting a cake in front of your kids with 100% certainty they will eat it, then condemning them to misery for it.
It makes no sense whatsoever allegorical or not, apart form demonstrating God as a cruel idiot.
What's funny (or actually disgusting) is there is a biblical child rearing (read: abuse) manual To Train Up a Child that tells you to do just this. Put something enticing in front of your toddler and tell them not to touch it. Then hit them every time they try to touch.
