It's no cooler to make intuitive leaps when you're an atheist than it is when you're a theist. Just off the top of my head I can think of another contributing factor; food production- particularly in cheap food that's quick to prepare when you don't, say, have the time or money to afford healthier food- is now so often loaded down with salts and sugars and whatnot as flavor enhancers.
So you've got a busier world where people don't have the time to cook, and can't necessarily afford healthy ingredients to begin with...
Which is all beside the point anyway, which is, as I said before, that people's circumstances aren't usually just the result of one thing. That's very simplistic thinking.

I agree it's not the ideal either, but I'm not the one going around talking about blobs, or about how good it would be to shame people. Whether you approve of their lifestyle or not, they're people just like you. I imagine it's very easy to sit in judgment without ever having been in their shoes, but come on. Acknowledge the physical reality of it, fine, but I bet you wouldn't like someone harping on all of your physical imperfections, and feeling entitled to do so, either.
