Simple, human beings give their gods all the things they have themselves. It is self projection of the desired self.
In Hindu epics the devas and devis are given a more fruitful sex life than any human could possible have. Muhammad is depicted as having inhumane potency as well I may add.

This is such an obvious example of "sex sells" I fell stupid pointing it out.
You are right since it is the other way around. Sexuality is projected on gods because of humans beings creating these gods. Every taboo and custom is retained in the myths and stories of the gods. But online porn and social networking has replaced that.
Sex always sells unless you are like me and find sex not in the slightest bit desirable.
