My all-time favourite is "Eyes wide shut". The other movies by Kubrick are great as well.
Another great director was Fritz Lang - "Metropolis" and "The Testament of Dr. Mabuse" are way ahead of their time and the concepts covered by these films are timeless and have been adapted by numberless others.
(although I found it extremely boring and even fell asleep when I watched it for the first time - maybe I was too young by then).
