As the universe expands and the overall density of 'stuff' decreases, eventually you get to the point (after a REALLY long time) where there isn't even a single particle of any kind in a volume of space enormously larger than our entire universe now, and then the universe keeps expanding and expanding and expanding.
Eventually, the 'arrow of time' becomes erratic (and 'fails') as there isn't 'anything' left in the universe for time to impinge upon.
It's pretty depressing, really. In the long run, the universe erases itself. Nothing matters, nothing at all is eternal, the fate of and for everything is infinite dilution in an infinite void . . .
