IF IF IF IF IF the word was used in a context that values instead of dictates I would agree, but for the reasons stated in the OP it is not a word worthy of use.

You can earn value too. But claims do not deserve taboos, power does not deserve taboos, which is why people invoke "respect", to set up a taboo.
