People subconsciously protect their ego all the time without realizing they are doing that.
"Respect" is an abused word and does not mean what you would like it to mean. It is used to hide from conflict and criticism.
I hate that word and I will never use it.
"Would you be nice to me" as a request, can be said with those words without the ego baggage "respect" has.
If that person you make that request to does not, then YOU have the choice to continue to deal with them or not.

No, you get used to a common usage, just like religion likes to look at only the good they do. I am pointing out the dark side of that word so that it does not get abused.
Kim Jong Un, wants "respect". My former boss at work, even when he was wrong wanted "respect". "Islam" wants "respect".
Even with parents they too want "respect" even when they are wrong.
That is the dark side of that word, and it does more damage than good, just like religious people ignore their own dark side.
It is far too abused for me to find any value in using it.
