Yeah, registered automatic weapons aren't all that common, even in the most trigger-happy states. They're A. Really freaking expensive compared to non Title II arms and B. Really really long waiting lists (almost a year now) for the BATFE to sign off on a citizen's legal possession of an automatic weapon. Of course, if you look in the wonderfully liberal states like California and Illinois, illegal automatic weapons are a lot more common. I'd argue that it's not so much the gun laws being counter-productive as much as cities' tendency to attract organized crime, but the basic fact is that automatic weapons are far more common among gangs than among the Red Blooded, Patriotic, Fascistic, Hyperconservative, Tea Partying, Cousin-Fucking Hillbilly Rednecks.
