There we go, thanks for the direction. Plugged that shit into google and found interviews and whatnot. So, it would appear that the Metroid series did indeed turn into a giant sexist joke. So much so that it made a cracked article that had me laughing my ass off (and apparently if I'd been better at video games Samus would have taken off more than just her helmet in the original). I suppose that I just didn't find it all that surprising that Samus was a chick - I was raised by my mother, aunts, and grandmother. The notion that a female could be the hero under the costume didn't seem odd to me then any more than it does now. I suppose even the "wow" factor could be construed as sexist, though.
