P.S. If you are having to add oil back to your vehicle, without changing, then one of two things is happening...
a. you have a leak, it's pretty much like changing your oil if you are adding it back, hence it's leaking out...
b. it's already breaking down within your engine and becoming slush, which of course will show up on your dip stick as low.
Also keep in mind that your gas mileage will go down when oil starts to breakdown. You are having to push your engine harder, which of course will make you have to use more gas etc. etc. etc. Just as rotating your tires helps with raising your gas mileage..
Yes, every engine will be different, just as the type of oil will be different, but the one thing oil has in common is that it will thicken over time when in use, and even while sitting up.....
I'm not saying you can't go 4 to 5 thousand miles at every oil change....But do that for a couple of years, open your engine up and take a peak....
All the black chunks and build up at the bottom of your pan will be the outcome....

It has been "shown to be the lifespan of oil in your engine" is not accurate. It has been "declared to be the lifespan of oil in your engine" is. I have never changed my oil more often than every 5 to 6 thousand miles and never had an issue. Ever.
