I cannot disrespect those two young men, because they're dead. But neither do I respect them. They didn't try to resolve the problems they had, they allowed those problems to consume them. That's not worthy of respect.
The world isn't all selfish and mean. If it seems that way it may simply be telling you what you expect to hear. Expect more out of the world and of yourself, and you'll thrive. Even without trying, you'll give back to the world instead of just bringing it --and yourself-- down. Plenty of people do, every day. They're worthy of respect.
"Well, evolution is a theory. It is also a fact. And facts and theories are different things, not rungs in a hierarchy of increasing certainty. Facts are the world's data. Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts. Facts don't go away when scientists debate rival theories to explain them. Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from ape- like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin's proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be discovered."
