New here and need advice

I come from a pretty much agnostic family with my mom being an atheist so I can't really advice on your situation. However based on my experience with my friends and such I'll suggest coming out as an agnostic or not-sure/don't-care type before you claim yourself to a be hell-bound sodomite (that's the standard definition of an atheist to the believers). Just say something like you are not really sure about the religious teachings and would rather prefer to find things out for yourself, also make sure to explain that you are not going against your loved ones or their faith, rather you are trying to define your own beliefs for yourself. Don't go into a debate or argument just yet, let them ease in a bit first and slowly accept that you are a lost cause. Also since you are already independent, I think it's about time you do find a way to tell them soon, it will help ease your mind and also it is a lot better coming from you rather than them finiding about it later in some other way.
