My GF and I eat very spicy food on a regular basis. For example, authentic Thai restaurants in LA, with actual Thai people doing the ordering. So hot, it makes me sweat instantly.
We can handle that. Hot, but doable.
We decided to see what the fuss was about, and bought a bottle of some kind of ghost pepper sauce. It had the usual warnings on it about keeping away from children and pregnant women.
Ha, ha we thought. Those marketing people! Good stuff!
Still, we were unnerved and took it easy. We got toothpicks and put a tiny dab of the stuff on the toothpick and touched the toothpick on the food.
It was so freakin' hot! Any more and the food wouldn't have been edible. Afterwards, we used our go-to habanero sauce, El Yucateco (excellent BTW), and it was mild in comparison. Keep in mind, El Yucateco will melt most people's faces clean off.
Also we noticed - we really like the flavor of the habanero pepper - the ghost, I'm not so sure. It has an almost chemically flavor about it.
We do use the GP sauce in things, but you have to be very, very careful. Mostly, if I want to sit at the table, sweat like a pig and have all the dinner guest poking fun, I'll go with the habanero sauce.
Yes, they really are that hot.
