Calling him voldemort gives him way to much credit. see voldemort was a brilliant man, and a tortured soul. But still driven by revenge as he was he had good qualities, and boundaries. He could have vowed to make the world better and been very able to do so, but instead his anger got the better of him.
Perhaps he is meant to be the mirror of harry. Both strong and capable, but one driven by love and the other hate. Despite the great suffering at the hands of others.
