Ah, the memories. In basic, I learned it was quite possible to fall asleep standing up. Sleep deprivation sucks. I can't decide what was worse, that or all the time I spent in a dog forsaken frozen hole in the ground.
This is why I joined the Air Force ... no field training worth mentioning.
Seriously, shopped all four recruiters. The Marines wanted me to be infantry -- no thanks. The Navy promised me two years on a boat ... and I get seasick. I go to the Army recruiter, a captain. He tells me how I can get to be a warrant officer and fly heloes yadayadayada, but I've got to get going -- catch the bus to make my afternoon class. "Can I talk to you Friday, Captain Bagadonuts?"
"No, I'll be out in the field, on exercises for the next three weeks."
Sitting at the bus stop, in a chilly December rain, thinking that the Army makes even their recruiting officers do field training in this shit ... well, that pretty much made the Air Force the deal.
