Just one detail. The police had an arbitrary "end time" set to the protest "after sundown". The use of the word "sundown" was one of many public relations blunders as this word, perhaps you might be unaware, is a very racially charged one.
Certain towns in America came to be known as "sundown towns". There used to be, during the days of segregation, a sign posted warning minorities, "N-----, don't be here after sundown". Any African American not heeding that sign and walking about the town after sundown was risking his/her life.
When the still peaceful demonstrations didn't end at at the arbitrary time set by the police, then the police began wailing on them.
