Well, sadly, in the book, Gandalf's many disappearances were not explained any more than "who the fuck knows what motivates a wizard?"
The added material (e.g. investigating Dol Guldur) was based on existing canon AFIAK, but with the director/writer's own spin on it.
I just got back from seeing the film. I won't post spoilers, but there were a number of teary moments near the end for me, even though I have read the book many times and I knew full well that... well, not gonna post that spoiler.
Overall, I thought the adaptation of The Hobbit was less successful than LotR, in my subjective opinion. I still enjoyed watching the three films, though.
