I don't consider the US a good model of how the criminal system should be ran, particularly because of the death penalty, ridiculously high sentences and sometimes too hard for crimes, criminalization of acts that shouldn't be illegal (i.e. Incest and drug consumption or possession) and the prison system -- In fact my professors frequently state that not following the American justice system is a high priority for us. So yeah... Sorry for that.
