Two genders exist because of traditional gender roles attached to both men and women. That said, gender roles do kind of exist among animals, so it's probably something that was there before we fully evolved into modern humans.
Personally, I don't regard being transgender as a whole new gender. If you're a woman who was born a biological man, you're just a woman. I feel like if you're going to be more serious about it you'd forget the "trans" and just refer to yourself as the gender/sex you identify as.
I'll accept "androgynous" as an in-between gender though, I understand some people are not "trans" per se, but feel they are not male or female. I'm not buying into all these unicorn "pangender, omnigender, genderfliud" identities though. They are neither here nor there and are just fancy new words for "androgyny". If you're going to use a term plucked out your arse like that, you've got no right to be offended if someone reacts like "what's that?". It's confusing.

"Ironically like the nativist far-Right, which despises multiculturalism, but benefits from its ideas of difference to scapegoat the other and to promote its own white identity politics; these postmodernists, leftists, feminists and liberals also use multiculturalism, to side with the oppressor, by demanding respect and tolerance for oppression characterised as 'difference', no matter how intolerable." - Maryam Namazie
