I honestly don't know why God chose to do it that way. He could have done it any way he wanted. I'll have to ask God why after I die. As for Jesus existing before his birth - yes he existed before his birth, but not in the physical body of Jesus. He is mentioned in the creation account and numerous other times in the old testament as "the angel of lord".
