Yup. Dogs are probably the closest contenders, particularly in circumstances where the environment provides substantial ambient cooling. Think sled dogs (but we can run them to death as well, just takes longer). Of course, dogs are more likely to be chasing something -with us- rather than chasing us, or being chased by us...really is a match made in heaven. They've got the sprint and the power, and we've got the soul crushing know-you're-going-to-end-up-as-dinner-no-matter-how-hard-you-push stamina. Not even an issue of pro athletes either. The average human could run down anything but a dog (and most likely a dog as well, it's a wash at optimum versus average). A runner would be on anything within the span of a single day. Might be why so many animals bed down tight when they see us, they already know better. Mauling us isn't exactly a safe proposition either...we have awfully dirty mouths with a ragged bite pattern......lol. Win the scuffle and the prize is an agonizing and short life, layed low by infection and parasites, but also by our seething hatred for any animal that's ever killed another human being.
(there are still some tribes that hunt gazelle this way...I used to have a link to some awesome footage, ill crawl around for it)
I'm taking Legolas in the duel btw, it's cinema either way and Legolas doesn't look like a douche when he hops around. I guess it would depend on the cameraman and post, eh?
