I'd have thought salvation comes after a few other steps in all fairness. It strikes me as a bit backward, surely some kind of relationship with God has to exist before salvation is possible?

Salvation comes when one accepts Christ for who He is. A relationship with God can't begin before this happens, by God's grace we are saved. Grace is unmerited love. If one doesn't merit salvation, then how is there a relationship before salvation. Christ said, "No one comes to the Father except through me." If you have to go through Jesus to get to the Father and, Jesus being God as the Father is, how can one possibly have a relationship before salvation? There's nothing made up here it's Biblical.

God loves those who believe and those who do not and the same goes for me, you have no choice in this matter. That puts the matter of total free will to rest.
