Maybe recognizing that there isn't a clear demarcation between religion and non-religion? People can have purpose and over-arching guidelines without believing in gods.
Here are excerpts from a MacArthur speech that sounds religious to me.
EDIT: I don't know about the NEW New Atheism. I was late and missed the original New Atheism. I do like lima beans though.
