Hawking is an interesting case. He is a brilliant guy, but his significance to science is somewhat inflated in the public eye. A bit like Dawkins, he is -nowadays- arguably more important as an inspirational icon of science than as a scientist in the strict sense. Although I think he is more important in gravity physics than Dawkins is in evolutionary biology.
