Perhaps the reason they appear contradictory is that they are two aspects of some truth that we simply don't have the ability to comprehend. We are finite so we can't expect to understand everything about God. A time is coming when we will understand him more clearly. First Corinthians 13:12 says, "For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known." The important thing is that he has revealed what is right and wrong and we are required to live by the standards he has set whether we understand the reason for them or not.

The Bible explains why there is so much evil. God created the first humans with free will and they chose to disobey God. The evil we see is the result of their disobedience.
His invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.
