I do this for my flower bed in the front yard.
I use dolomite lime to keep the pH of the bedsoil high. So it's basic and not hospitable to the wild onion. (otherwise that shit'll be everywhere, it's all over my lawn as it is)
I have Spider grass, hydrangeas, hostas, and rose bushes all in their own 'soil islands' inside the bed. They are isolated from the limed soil. Keeps the garden relatively weed free. Crabgrass is still a bitch. Lot of work, every year, though.

"There remain four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking." ~Christopher Hitchens, god is not Great
