I've never tried to induce it. It happens only rarely for me. When it does, it's typically short-lived, and I only have partial control. Often times, I can only control it to a certain extent. Two examples:
1) A guy was chasing me with a gun in a dream. Part way through, I realized it was a dream and thought "I don't want him to have a gun; I want the gun!". The gun disappeared from his hand and a knife appeared in mine. I was a bit disappointed, but I rolled with it.
2) I had a falling dream that I realized was dream part way down*. Right before I hit the ground, I was able to redirect my momentum, but now I was flying parallel to the ground about three feet off of it at the same speed. I was able to steer left and right, but could not slow down. So, I was trying to avoid crashing into rocks with the same force as my earlier fall, which made it a kind of "out of the frying pan and into the fire" type situation.
* There was a period in my life where I had so many falling dreams that I learned to recognize them. I couldn't control them, but I at least lost all fear of them during this time. That stopped the one time I actually landed in the falling dream and convinced myself I'd really jumped for real! Complete with out-of-body vantage point, and everything! Asshole brain.
