Why do all religious people come across as though they are the hells angels trying to scare us into conforming?

Why can't they just be happy knowing that they are safe.
It's like they're constantly persecuted by their own little voice of reason in their heads and they hate us for not suffering as they do. No wonder they can't wait for the next life.
