It's the move away from christian morality.Well why should Christians dictate what's moral? Since the US is a country with millions of inhabitants with diverse religious beliefs, isn't it better to simply promote the separation of church and state? No one is dictating you must personally approve gay marriage - You can continue to promote traditional marriage/family as much as you want, and people who support you have the right to listen to you and applaud - People who disagree have the right to tell you you're wrong and explain why. That's how it works considering we can't all have the same ideas. I support the right of gays to get married, but I wouldn't oppose a Christian refusing to bake a cake for a gay ceremony as well, provided there was someone else to bake the cake - I also abhor the idea of forcing churches to accommodate gay marriage both for the well being of gays and because churches can have their own rules as they're independent institutions.
Precisely this.
I'll say it again, I don't need the "Christian marriage" icing on the cake as I'm not Christian. I just want the marriage contract in front of a judge and for it to be legally recognised as equal to a straight marriage. Christians can keep their "Christian marriage". If and when I get hitched, my marriage will be anything but Christian and I like that just the way it is. I think any gay person who lacks such respect for themself that they want Christianty to validate their marriage is a fool.
The problem is that marriage is not a Christian invention, it is a pre-historic practice that was observed in almost every culture in a wide variety of diverse ways. For me, gay marriage isn't about making Christians accept it. It's about reclaiming a practice they have appropriated for themselves and developed an exclusive monopoly on dictacting the rules.
