France’s clandestine military support of Haftar began in Benghazi as early as 2015, with a view toward countering terrorism and restoring security in Libya. Paris’ support of the authoritarian Haftar looks inimical to its liberal-democratic values, but it is broadly in line with its efforts to develop military alliances with authoritarian leaders in other parts of Africa to secure the Sahel.

General discontentment

Already low in early 2018 (47% approval in January 2018[81]), French President Emmanuel Macron's approval rating had dipped below 25% at the beginning of the movement.[82] The government's method of curbing the budget deficit had proven unpopular, with Macron being dubbed the "président des très riches" (president of the very rich) by his former boss, François Hollande.[83]

Macron is not a patriot whatsoever; he just wants to save his neck before the next elections; nothing could prevent another Yellow Vests but an imaginary battle with the same old fake boogyman.
