As a human interest story it's passable - which is probably why they decided to give it that treatment for film. As a comment on appalachian culture and an explanation for trumpism; and the argument for why trumpism is true.....it's a steaming pile.
Insomuch as the characters were intentionally crafted to fit the authors narrative thrust - then these characters in the film..which is in many other senses separate from the written work - are merely the author's own self loathing right wing stereotypes.
