The anthropocene era is a geological designation. Some present day geologists suggest that far future geologists will delineate strata from 10,000 years ago through today by human activity.
Other geologists object, saying we shouldn't name a current era based on what we assume future geologists will supposedly determine. I suspect that is a similar reason why present day historians prefer to wait on what to call this period of history.
