So knowing that we have lots of historicity in the bible and can learn about the regions of the world and cultures, don't throw the whole book out just b/c your an atheist.

Okay. I'll bite. As an atheist, I do not believe that certain bits of the bible are true. How do I separate those bits from the other bits so that I can avoid throwing out the whole book?

It's a matter of dispute whether there are older documents. Some people have very, very, very good reason to think there exist older documents. And, even if it was the oldest, why does that alone make it authoritative?

Not authorative but it's what we go to work with and I'm sure it's got some truth in it, it's not all bogus, even scientist sback up parts of it

Dude. I've known people who were complete fucking liars most of the time who still "had some truth in them." You're going to have to do better than that.

YES. Some statements made in the Bible are true. That's not controversial. True things are stated in nearly every historical document. I'm sure North Korean propaganda "has some truth in it."

How low are you setting the bar?

The Bible isn't even close to being the oldest written historical account. And the 'history' it does contain is more than a little problematic.

Do I believe Jesus rose from the dead? No. You need to be alive before you can resurrect.

It accurately represents what a group of iron age refugees thought about their world, and their relationship to their world, and their place within it. That's where it's historical accuracy begins and ends.

Is that not enough?

Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

I don't know. Do you think some people get so hung up on the fact that this guy rose from the dead that they forget what he said about doing unto others? It's like they think, "Yes. I'm certain this guy rose from the dead. Instead of treating others as I would have them treat me, I'm going to go around burning people alive if they don't concur with me on all my religious opinions.

You're a history buff. Did the Christians (historically speaking) do unto others as they wished to be done unto them? Or did they treat people cruelly and persecute them, all while lamenting every bit of persecution that came their direction?
